New: Ohio’s Voter ID Law

  • As of January 6, 2023, Ohio now only allows an Ohio driver’s license, State of Ohio ID card, a US passport, or a US military ID card to vote. Utility bills or proofs of residence (like those provided by colleges) are no longer valid to validate your address at the polls.

  • Out-of-state students wishing to vote in Ohio must now obtain an Ohio ID if they want to vote in person (early or on election day) or they can use their social security number to vote by mail without needing to obtain an Ohio ID

  • If voters cast a provisional ballot, they now have 4 days to validate them in person at the Board of Elections.

  • For more information on voting in Ohio, please visit the Ohio Secretary of State. For more information on voting in any state, please visit the Fair Elections Center.

How To Register to Vote (Ohio Residents):

  • Ohio residents with an Ohio Driver’s License can register to vote online or update their address at https://olvr.ohiosos.gov/

  • Ohio residents without an Ohio driver's license must print out a physical copy of a voter registration form and use their social security number instead of their driver’s license number. Forms can be accessed here: Ohio Voter Registration Form

  • Voter registration forms can also be accessed by requesting one at the circle desk in Armstrong Student Center, or by contacting Secretary for Governmental Relations, Patrick Houlihan, at houlihpf@miamioh.edu

  • Any physical copies of a voter registration form must be mailed to the Butler County Board of Elections, or your local county board of elections.

How to Register to Vote (Out-of-State Students):

  • Out-of-State students can register to vote at their Ohio address in Oxford. This is only if they have actually lived at their Oxford address. Out-of-State first-year students who have not arrived on campus cannot register to vote in Oxford. By registering to vote in Ohio you are declaring Ohio as your primary place of residence and you will not be able to vote in your home state this election cycle.

  • Because Out-of-State students do not have an Ohio driver’s license, they must do the following:

    • Print out a physical copy of the voter registration form which can be found here: Ohio Voter Registration Form

    • Voter registration forms can also be accessed by requesting one at the circle desk in Armstrong Student Center, or by contacting Secretary for Governmental Relations, Patrick Houlihan, at houlihpf@miamioh.edu

    • Mark “Registering as an Ohio Voter” at the top of the form.

    • Use the last four digits of your social security number.

  • If Out-Of-State students would like to register to vote in their home state, they can go to www.vote.org and follow the instructions carefully.

How To Return Your Voter Registration Form:

  • All forms, even those filled out online should be printed and mailed to a county’s board of elections. Forms can also be dropped off in Armstrong Student Center at the front circle desk or the Wilks Office (ASC 2018).

  • For students voting in Oxford, Voter Registration forms can be mailed to Butler County Board of Elections at this address:

Butler County Ohio Board of Elections
    1802 Princeton Road, Suite 600
    Hamilton, OH 45011-4742

  • For a full county directory visit the Secretary of State’s website here

How to Vote Absentee:

  • Ohio voters can vote absentee by filling out a request form from the Secretary of State’s Office and mailing the application to your county’s board of elections. Forms can also be returned to the Wilks Office (ASC 2018). Forms can be found here

  • Absentee ballot request forms can also be accessed by requesting one at the Wilks Office (ASC 2018), or by contacting Secretary for Governmental Relations, Patrick Houlihan, at houlihpf@miamioh.edu

  • Absentee Ballots can be requested up until 7 days before the election you wish to vote in. However, it is recommended that you request your ballot much earlier if you choose to vote absentee.

  • Once students have received their ballot, they should fill it out as soon as possible and return either by mail or by dropping it off at their board of elections. For ballots to be counted they must be received by the board of election by 7:30 PM on Election Day or postmarked the day before the election.

Voting in Person:

  • Students choosing to vote in person should plan accordingly.

  • Students may vote early or vote on November 7th. Students who choose to vote early can only vote at the Butler County Board of Elections if they are registered in Oxford. Early voting starts on October 11th, 2023, and ends Sunday, November 5th, 2023. The operating hours of the Board of Elections can be found here

  • Students who choose to vote on November 7th can check their polling location at IWILLVOTE.com.

Working the polls:

Because the pandemic has made older Americans especially vulnerable, young poll workers are needed this election. These are paid positions. Any student or staff member interested in becoming a poll worker can sign up here to support the community and engage in this service opportunity.
