Guide to ASG Committees
ASG Committees 101
ASG currently has thirteen (13) total committees. Nine (9) of them are committees chaired by Secretaries of the Executive Cabinet and four (4) of them are “standing committees” chaired by members of Senate Leadership.
Standard Committees
The Academic Affairs Committee is chaired by Secretary Caitlin Spyra. Members of Academic Affairs run the Outstanding Professor Awards (OPAs) every year, advance student-centered academic policy, and advocate for changes in curriculum.
The Communications & Media Relations Committee is chaired by Secretary Gracie Grady. Members of Communications & Media Relations maintain the social media outlets of ASG, such as this website or our Instagram, along with designing graphics and responding to student questions sent to ASG.
The Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion (DEI) Committee is chaired by Secretary Riley Crabtree. Members of DEI ensure we are representing and advocating for all students on campus. They also serve as liaisons to multicultural student organizations and help facilitate events with both these organizations and the Center for Student Diversity & Inclusion.
The Financial Services Committee is chaired by SecretaryJeff Koch. Members of FSC are responsible for distributing over $1.3 million in student fees to student organizations every year and holding funding hearings. You can also join FSC as a student-at-large!
The Governmental Relations Committee is chaired by Secretary Mollie Duffy. Members of Governmental Relations coordinate with the Office of ASPIRE, run civic engagement activities, and help to advocate for ASG outside of Miami. They also provide information about SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) and how to vote at this link.
The Infrastructure & Sustainability Committee is chaired by Secretary John Day. Members of Infrastructure & Sustainability advocate to make Miami more sustainable, help create campus plans, and push for more recycling across campus. You can view the committee’s current initiatives here.
The Off-Campus Affairs Committee is chaired by Secretary Patrick Houlihan. Members of Off-Campus Affairs run off-campus events for both constituents and the community, spread information on renters’ rights, and distribute a monthly newsletter for off-campus students. Learn more about the Off-Campus Affairs Committee here!
The On-Campus Affairs Committee is chaired by Secretary Daniel Martin. Members of On-Campus Affairs work with residence life, recreational services, and transportation services to make sure students living on-campus have their needs met. On-Campus works to improve campus life and frequently collaborates with others to make this possible.
The Safety & Wellness Committee is chaired by Secretary Jack Isphording. Members of Safety & Wellness work on issues including mental health, sexual & interpersonal violence, and accessibility.
Standing Committees
The Administrative (Admin) Committee is chaired by Parliamentarian Jackson Abram. Members of Admin review ASG’s bylaws and documents to keep them up-to-date and transparent to the student body. They also keep track of student concerns and ensure they get responses.
The Elections Committee is chaired by Speaker Shelby Alford. Members of Elections facilitate all of ASG’s elections, including the annual Student Body Presidential/Vice Presidential elections, and keep candidates in accordance with bylaws.
The Oversight Committee is chaired by Speaker Pro Tempore Nick Barry. Members of Oversight investigate potential rule breaks, review the effectiveness of active committees, and keep Senators accountable in their conduct. All members must go through non-bias training before participating in any Oversight investigations.
The Steering Committee is chaired by Speaker Shelby Alford. Members of Steering are specifically selected either by the Speaker or by the Senate itself, up to a limit of four Senators. Steering looks over all potential legislation before it reaches the floor, approves the agenda for each week, and assists the Speaker in the training of Senators.
ASG has other outside advisory groups, commissions, and University Committees that Senators and students-at-large may choose to participate. You can read about ASG’s committees in more depth in the Bylaws and learn more about University Committees here. We also appoint student members to sit on the City of Oxford’s Student/Community Relations Commission (SCRC).
