Pick Your Portion
—Resources—
“Why waste it? Pick your portion!”
The first step in the Environmental Protection Agency’s Food Recovery Hierarchy is to reduce food at the source by simply throwing away less food.
Our goal is to reduce the waste each student creates in the dining hall by only taking what we want.
Use this language to specify your order while in the dining hall to reduce food waste!
What the stats say:
According to the FDA, 30-40% of food is wasted, ~133 billion pounds of wasted food annually
Each person wastes ~20 pounds of food waste per month (from the FDA)
Costs money to waste the resources (water, energy, and labor)
The remaining pre-consumer waste can more easily be recovered by organizations like the Food Recovery Network in the future
Estimate your serving size using these household items as a visual!
Baseball = 1 cup (i.e. of vegetables, pasta, cereal)
Deck of cards = 3oz of cooked poultry or meat
iPhone = 3 oz of cooked fish
Golfball = 2 tablespoons
Poker chip = 1 tablespoon
