Myths about signing an off-campus lease
You can end your lease if you’re having roommate problems
False! A lease is a binding contract. Be sure to read your lease throughly before signing. There are resources available to address issues with your landlord but be prepared to uphold your end of the lease until the predetermined date listed on your lease.
You need to sign a lease at least a year in advance or all spots will be full

you can sign multiple leases and choose your favorite later
Reality: there are no legal obstacles with signing multiple leases, but, a lease is a contract you must uphold so you cannot sign multiple leases and later decide to only uphold one.
you can’t be evicted during the winter or during a semester
Reality: a violation of your lease contract can end in eviction. Please check out these resources for more information.
you can rely on your landlord for legal advice
Reality: That may not be a good idea. It’s best to know your rights and plan accordingly.
you can get out of a lease because of covid-19
Reality: The pandemic is not a valid reason to end the lease. Be sure to consult with a parent, guardian, realtor, lawyer, etc. if you have questions.
