  • Is living close to campus a priority?

  • Do you want to live alone or with roommates?

  • How well do you know your prospective roommates?

  • How much can you afford to pay for housing expenses?

  • Are you able to read and understand the lease?

  • How much does the landlord require for a security deposit?

  • Is the term of the lease reasonable for you?

  • Is there an early move out date?

  • Does your lease specify a unit?

  • Is there a mandatory arbitration clause?

  • What utilities do you have to pay for? How are they paid?

Suggestions:

  • Take photos of your house or apartment when moving in

  • Don’t be pressured into signing a lease early

  • Be cautions when applying online for housing

  • Get information about your landlord and realtor before signing a lease

  • If you're planning on studying abroad for a semester, it's never too early to start looking for a sub letter. Talk to your roommates and figure out a plan for someone to take over your lease for the semester you will be gone.
